Abstract

O objectivo do presente artigo e fornecer uma visão do processo de surgimento e desenvolvimento da história da República da Letónia ao longo do século XX. Apesar de como nação pertencer, desde o período clássico, a família europeia, como Estado, a Letónia surge apenas no final da Grande Guerra. Analisar as vicissitudes do seu surgimento na complexa relação com a Revolução Soviética e particularmente o comportamento da diplomacia ocidental face a Letónia no contexto da sempre mais premente "questão russa". A euforia da jovem república no período entre guerras. As ilusões desfeitas com a ocupação soviética, alemã e de novo soviética no período da Segunda Guerra Mundial. O surgimento da República Socialista Soviética da Letónia. Existência da Letónia de jure vs. de facto até ao restabelecimento da independência em 1991.

The objective of the present article is to supply a vision of the sprouting and development from the history of the Latvian Republic along the 20th century. Despite as a nation it belonged to the European family since Classical Greece period as a State, Latvia only arises by the end of the Great War. Analyze the vicissitudes of its sprouting in the complex relations with the Soviet Revolution and the behaviour of western diplomacy regarding Latvia in the context of the always more pressing "Russian question". The euphoria of the young Republic between wars. The undone illusions with the Soviet occupation, German, and again Soviet in the period of World War Two. The new Socialist Soviet Republic of Latvia, the continuity of Latvia de jure vs. de facto. Latvia's history up to the re-establishment of independence in 1991.
