O imaginário social das epidemias em Portugal no século XIX

Abstract

A análise das epidemias mais importantes do século XIX demonstram a existência por parte das elites e da população duma clara consciência das suas implicações sociais, culturais e politicas para a sociedade portuguesa. A resposta colectiva dada aos desafios provocados pela doença permitiu evitar as formas de discriminação social e de hostilização relativamente a grupos humanos em risco de marginalização e suspeitos de serem os responsaveis directos e/ou indirectos do mal.

The analysis of the most important epidemics of the nineteenth century shows the awareness, demonstrated by the populations and the elite, of their social, cultural and politic implications in the portuguese society. The collective answer given to the challenges created by the disease avoided the forms of social discrimination with respect to human groups in risk of social exclusion and suspect of being the cause of the disease.
