This dissertation has, as a goal, a possible intervention in the village of Catarredor. This is one of the schist villages of the mountain range of Lousã. It is not an isolated case and, therefore, we aim to study the base of the formation of the schist villages in Serra da Lousã. We want to understand the several circumstances that moulded them until the present days, aiming to project an intervention that preserves the patrimonial values without harming the surrounding environment and avoiding that the patrimony loses its essence, or is forgotten by the next generations. The work strategy applied to this work was based on the consultation of historical documents with the intention of defining the appearance of the schist villages and understanding the influence that Catarredor’s village had on them. We sought for the clarification of some concepts to facilitate the comprehension of this work and - with the goal of understanding the guidelines applied in each case - so that we could establish comparisons with the other villages that constitute Serra da Lousã, which have been subject of restauration interventions. Based on this research, appears the first concern that motivates the developing of the present work: “How should we intervene in the rural patrimony of the Catarredor’s Village?”; which, quickly, transforms into the second question: “How to intervene with a contemporary claim?”. These two concerns constitute the theme of this dissertation, that hopes to demonstrate that architecture is an evolving process and that, nowadays, the generalized interventions on the architectural patrimony don’t have to be, necessarily, exact reproductions of what was there before, since the social paradigm is changing, as are the necessities of the population. We, as architects have the duty of knowing how to reinterpret history in a manner that it isn’t lost and transports to prosperity its essence, despite of any intervention. Thus, we present a possible intervention on the village of Catarredor.
