Abstract: A procura de uma arquitectura ecológica.
The pursuit of an ecological architecture. Such is the path in which this text is inscribed. In it, we may find the paradigmatic questions of our days (slogans of the urgent challenges proposed to us by the world), but not only. The perspective suggested here, lies beyond the urgency of the now, tentatively reaching for greater meaning. The ecological path of architecture, should we name it so, acquires contemporary expressions, themselves so much mediatized – words such as “green” architecture, sustainable, or ecological come to us as synonyms of the civilizational ethos to follow, manifested within the construction industry. We recognize a tendency, perhaps “green”. Its legitimacy is not questioned here. However, we propose to show that the ecological expression of architecture goes well beyond limited aesthetics and imagery. Above it, the ecology within architecture pursues the understanding of the world it lives in, emerging harmoniously from it. We found the necessity for architecture to grow an equilibrium congruent with its circumstance (part and whole). We may try understanding this equilibrium’s material expression through reason and emotion. So, let us follow the answers given to us by the most scientific methods (such as the embodied energy). Nonetheless, the sensitive, emotive and intuitive expressiveness tends to be underestimated within the praxis of sustainability (perhaps due to it lacking measurability and security). Dwelling in-between both pursuits, this investigation found a truly ecological pathway for architecture, expressing itself while belonging to its context in time and space (see the Santa Maria da Vitória Monastery, and see the Piscina da Marés endeavour). On one hand, the objective parameters provide us with fundamental information towards the sustainability of a building. On the other hand, its harmony asks for the materialization of deeper meanings – it asks for the human marriage with the highest expression of Being. It needs Poetry to be built.
