Abstract: Focused on the rehabilitation project of the Gardunha Theatre (Cinema Theatre), in Fundão, and in the scope of the curricular unit Dissertation and Project Work, this dissertation proposes to present a global perspective on the theatres built in Portugal between the I930s and I960s, inserted in a cultural, ideological and historical panorama. These auditoria, devoted to the performing arts and shows, built in Portugal during the "Estado Novo" politicai regime, despite being of private initiative, were the background for the ideological and cultural consolidation of the regime. Accordingly to the study of some previously selected buildings, in the period of the "Estado Novo" regime, this dissertation aims to understand the reasons that led to the dissemination of these auditoria, of cultural and recreational nature, in the Portuguese territory. At the same time, it will acknowledge the implications of the ideological factors in the modern Portuguese architecture. The Gardunha Theatre, inaugurated in 1958, fits into an architectural language compromised between modernism and the historicist imaginary assumed by the state as its national identity. Classified since 2009 as municipal heritage interest, the building is currently vacant and degraded. The Theatre stands out for being a relevant instrument regarding the local urban structure. Its heritage value is inseparable from the collective memory. The project proposal aims at the rehabilitation of the Theatre in order to qualify it as an attractive contemporary auditorium for the cultural and recreational joy of the population and at the same time, to highlight its original character, in the social-political context of the time it was built.
