Arquitetura japonesa contemporânea : cruzamento de culturas entre ocidente e oriente

Abstract

A presente dissertação pretende analisar teoricamente as caraterísticas e a evolução da arquitetura japonesa, de modo a identificar e explorar a presença de influências ocidentais na arquitetura japonesa, mais especificamente na arquitetura contemporânea. Desenvolveu-se uma investigação minuciosa à história da arquitetura japonesa desde os primeiros tempos de que há registos até à atualidade, incluindo o contexto político, social, cultural e psicológico em que essa evolução decorreu. Registaram-se alguns momentos de cruzamento entre a cultura ocidental e a japonesa, mas receberam maior destaque, e por isso foram analisadas com maior atenção, as várias e profundas influências ocidentais que decorreram a partir do século XIX, dando origem à arquitetura moderna e posteriormente à arquitetura contemporânea no Japão. Com o objetivo de analisar a presença de influências ocidentais e da tradição arquitetónica japonesa na arquitetura contemporânea desta sociedade, elegeram-se dois arquitetos, Kazuo Shinohara e Kazuyo Sejima, como casos de estudo, de modo a entender o seu percurso, as suas influências e relação com a tradição. Para além da investigação teórica entendeu-se que para uma melhor interpretação e análise seria importante realizar uma visita de estudo ao Japão, como método de recolha de dados, clarificações e exploração da cultura e arquitetura contemporânea japonesa. Ao longo da dissertação será demonstrado que a arquitetura contemporânea japonesa, apesar de mostrar ser uma arquitetura muito diferente da tradicional, tem uma presença enraizada da cultura japonesa, sendo uma cultura muito antiga e tradicional, bem como de influências ocidentais marcadas e determinantes das suas caraterísticas.

The present dissertation intends to analyze theoretically the characteristics and the evolution of japanese architecture, in order to identify and explore the presence of western influences in japanese architecture, more specifically in contemporary architecture. A thorough investigation into the history of japanese architecture, since the beginings up to the present, including the political, social, cultural and psychological context in which this evolution took place. There were some moments of crossroads between western and japanese culture which gave rise to the modern architecture and later to the contemporary architecture in Japan, mainly the profound western influences that took place from the 19th century onwards. In order to analyze the presence of Western influences and the Japanese architectural tradition in the contemporary architecture of this society, two architects, Kazuo Shinohara and Kazuyo Sejima, were chosen as case studies, in order to understand their path, their influences and relationship with tradition. In addition to theoretical research and for a better interpretation and analysis of the theme, a study visit to Japan was carried out, as a method of collecting data, clarifying and exploring contemporary japanese culture and architecture. Throughout the dissertation, it will be demonstrated that contemporary japanese architecture, despite showing to be a very different architecture from the traditional one, has a rooted presence of japanese culture, being a very old and traditional culture, as well as marked western influences and determinants of its characteristics.
