The term Modern Architecture characterized architecture throughout the 20th century, enclosed in the setting of international Modernism. The aim was to evolve into a more sophisticated architecture and to break away from the previous movement: the architecture of the 19th century, expressed in the Eclecticism. Modernism revealed several principles that were followed by architects from different styles, and it also set aside the historical design, leading to architectural cleanliness and developing into a modern style. The Heritage Charters are assumed as essential documents to underpin approaches to the preservation of properties, as well as heritage conservation, maintenance and restoration plans, whether this heritage be historical, cultural or artistic. However, the Modern movement also highlighted a particularity in Portuguese Architecture, creating a new language, through the construction of rather emblematic buildings, which made their own history due to their high value. Within this context, the Architecture and the State established, throughout those years, a rather peculiar affiliation. Constructions during Salazar’s dictatorship disclose the expression of control that Portugal was experiencing at the time, with neither chances of innovation, nor emergence of the Modern model in the country. The first indicators of change arose in the decade of the 20’s, as a pursuit for a new language that trailed an agreement between technical and formal models. The conservation of Modern Architectural Heritage becomes tangible, and it is understood mainly as a cooperation between the building, the history and the implanted urban background. The new building materials triggered the development of Modernism, hence the “first generation” to use them emerged isolated, due to innovative styles. Modern Architecture retained a whole generation of Modernist Architects. Those had skills to explore the potential of the new materials, while venturing into a linguistic renovation, since original masterpieces were built by some of the best Modern representatives.
