The conservation of the built heritage is in itself a sustainable act because it reduces the impacts induced by the construction, operation and maintenance of the built space by increasing its useful life. In addition to this basic aspect, the act of rehabilitation has other implications for the sustainability of the construction, namely of a social and economic nature, in promoting employment and the local economy, while preserving a cultural and identity heritage of society. In order to address sustainability challenges in the context of rehabilitation, it is imperative that the architecture contributes to the difficulties faced by the built-up park in its reintegration into the real estate market. To establish differences between the options of a conventional constructive system and a sustainable building system and to understand how at the level of architectural design the behavior of a building in terms of sustainability can be altered. The case study of the built heritage selected for this analysis involves one of the typical examples of Portuguese vernacular architecture, the house-patio. In this typology of housing, present in several regions of the national territory, urgent rehabilitation needs will serve to discuss the contribution of architecture to a sustainable rehabilitation, the main objective of this thesis. The methodology established for this approach involves first developing and updating the state of art focusing on the concepts involved in the work of other authors and guided by an approach that will consider the Arab and Roman origins, reflecting on similar examples in southern Europe and North Africa. It is intended to demonstrate with the case study that, with simple criteria and solutions, great differences can be made in the energy, environmental and economic efficiency of the built object. Based on the critical analysis of the results, it is intended to create a set of criteria for sustainable rehabilitation, highlighting the role of architecture and its contribution to the sustainability of the built environment, reviewing a set of solutions and their impacts in the field of efficient use resources. The specific objectives of this work are to establish and discuss the differences imposed by sustainability options at the level of rehabilitation project, considering the characteristics of this example of the national built heritage, translated by the patio house. A survey of the different typologies, materials and construction systems of this type of housing will be carried out and the main pathologies for an intervention with sustainable rehabilitation solutions will be listed. This case study will serve as an experimental framework and validation of the concepts to be explored during the PhD, as a source for establishing criteria for sustainable rehabilitation. These criteria will consider the life cycle of the building. In the acquisition and consolidation of knowledge about the act of rehabilitating buildings of this typology, the importance of the fundamental role of architecture to incorporate the concepts of sustainability is reinforced.pt_PT
