Espaços industriais esquecidos no tempo : Minas da Borralha

Abstract

O tema a desenvolver para a unidade curricular Projecto III foca-se na reabilitação de infraestruturas de extracção e na intervenção arquitectónica sobre o Património Industrial. Entendendo o Movimento Moderno como ponto de viragem na arquitectura industrial e tomando consciência do processo de desindustrialização que se começou a verificar a partir dos anos 70 do século XX, levanta-se a questão: o que fazer com estes espaços industriais agora desactivados e, em muitos casos, abandonados e deixados à ruína? Pretende-se entender de que forma a arquitectura contemporânea contribuiu para complementar estes exemplares da arquitectura do período modernista, com a introdução de novos elementos ou reestruturando os espaços e as suas materialidades na procura de uma adaptação à nova função do edifício. Procura-se, também, expôr a importância do reconhecimento do valor patrimonial da indústria de extracção produzida em Portugal, evidenciando que a sua recuperação poderá ser uma forma de revitalizar um espaço rural como as Minas da Borralha que caíram no esquecimento e no abandono. É nesta linha de pensamento que a dissertação se assume com o título de Espaços Industriais Esquecidos no Tempo, com o objectivo de afirmar a importância de intervir sobre o património arquitectónico industrial português, agora em ruína, não menos importante, reconhecendo o seu inegável valor.

The theme to be developed for the Project III focuses on the rehabiitation of extraction’s infrastructures and architectural intervention on the industrial heritage. While understanding the modern movement as a turning point in industrial architecture and realizing the process of deindustrialization that began in the 70s, we will also try to answer the question: what to do with these industrial spaces now disabled and in many cases, abandoned and left to ruin? The aim is to understand how contemporary architecture contributed to complement these examples of architecture’s modern period, with the introduction of new elements or by restructuring spaces and in materialities in the search for a new adaptation to the new role of the building’s purpose. We also try to expose te importance of recognizing the heritage value of the mining industry produced in Portugal, showing that the recovery may be a way to revitalize a rural area, as te Borralha’s Mines that have been forgotten and abandoned. It is in this line of thinking that the present dissertation wields the title Industrial Spaces Forgotten in Time, in order to stress te importance of intervening on the portuguese industrial architectural heritage, now in ruins, and not least important, in order to recognize ia undeniable value.
