Abstract

O trabalho que apresentamos visa abordar os vários testemunhos deixados por diversos autores estrangeiros que registaram as suas impressões sobre Portugal, desde a segunda metade do século XVIII até aos primórdios do século XIX. Acentuamos que este período realça-se pela riqueza abundante de relatos e de memórias de viagens relativamente a Portugal, possuindo alguns visões mais fundamentadas e outros mais fantasiosas. Na nossa óptica iremos utilizar as contribuições dos amiudados autores forasteiros como fontes históricas, realçando a sua origem no contexto intelectual do Iluminismo, a sua contextualização histórica de um Portugal situado na charneira entre a tradição e a modernidade e a abordagem ao Portugal Literário da época. Os relatos são, afinal, o produto de uma nova atitude perante a viagem e o seu valor na formação do europeu dito civilizado e, ainda, o reflexo do sentido de uma Europa una e de uma civilização comum a todas as nações.

The present work aims to approach the multiple testimonies left by several foreign authors who have registered their views on Portugal since the second half of the eighteenth century to the dawn of the nineteenth century. In fact, this period it is accentuated by abundant reports and memories of trips around Portugal, some of them are more accurate while others more fancy. We will use the contributions of outsider authors as historical sources enhancing their origin in the intellectual context of Enlightenment as its historical context of Portugal between tradition and modernity mentioning its literary approach. Concluding, the reports are, after all, the product of a new attitude towards travel and concur in shaping the so-called civilized European, showing an united civilization common to all nations.
