"À Descoberta de Portugal" : o "Guia de Portugal" de Raúl Proença

Abstract

A presente comunicação pretende analisar a concepção de “viagem” presente no pensamento de Raúl Sangreman Proença (1884-1941) e expressa na edição do “Guia de Portugal” (1924-1969). A obra nascia das novas necessidades do turismo e destinava-se a preencher uma lacuna do panorama editorial nacional, não se limitando ao enunciar tradicional do conjunto de informações úteis ao viajante culto. O objectivo da obra era mais vasto e mais exigente, pois procurava contribuir para a formação de cada cidadão através da revelação de um “outro” Portugal tão próximo e, simultaneamente, tão distante do quotidiano existencial de cada português. A “descoberta” da realidade essencial do país implicava a identificação de cada um com o património histórico e geográfico pátrio. A viagem física pelo território nacional era, ao mesmo tempo, uma viagem espiritual que permitia descobrir uma memória colectiva e fazer a aprendizagem do significado mais profundo da pátria, na linha da pedagogia política do movimento “Seara Nova” da Primeira República Portuguesa.

The present article aims to analyze the conception of “journey” present in Raúl Sangreman Proença’s (1884-1941) thought, expressed in the “Guia de Portugal” edition (1924- 1969). The literary work arose from the new needs in tourism and was destined to fill a gap in the national editorial scenery, not limiting itself to the traditional enouncement of useful information for the cultured traveler. The “discovery” of the country’s essential reality implied that each one identified himself with the historic heritage and geographic homeland. The physical journey throughout the national territory was, at the same time, a spiritual journey that allowed the discovery of a collective memory and the learning of the deepest meaning of homeland, in the pedagogical political line of the First Portuguese Republic group “Seara Nova”.
